Fun Cat Facts

THE AMAZING (and not so amazing) FELINE

~ Felines sleep two thirds of the day.
On average, the facts about cats confirm they generally sleep about two thirds of every day. If you do the math, it means your nine-year-old kitty has pretty much slept away about six years of life. Chances are, they'll find a particular place they enjoy and it becomes their favorite napping spot.
~ Cats have human-like emotions.
A cat's brain shares some remarkable similarities to a human brain. Although experts disagree on the depth and range, all confirm that kitties feel emotions similar to people. Happiness, excitability, playfulness, depression and anger are all there. Perhaps that's why you think your cat likes to retaliate?
~ Cat bites are dangerous.
It's true - the bite from a cat can be toxic and dangerous. According to the existing facts about cats and their owners, approximately 40,000 individuals are bitten by cats in the United States every year. Vets recommend treatment for serious bites from your doctor as it IS possible to die if left untreated and an infection develops.
~ Cats can jump high.
Did you know that some cats can jump up to five times their own height in just one leap? Hmmm....guard those tuna fish sandwiches with your life! And perhaps those lovely prized art pieces from your friends!
~ Cats have internal GPS systems.
Lost cats really can find their way home. Various experts point to sunlight angles, the earth's magnetic fields and another capability referred to as PSI Traveling. Whatever the case, recorded facts about cats confirm their often long and arduous journeys to reach home and a favored human companion.
~Cats can use pet doors.
Cats can use doggie doors!  Know who came up with the idea? Gravity King Sir Isaac Newton! According to various tales passed down over the years, Newton was experimenting with light in a darkened room and one of his most prized cats (reportedly named "Spithead") kept opening the door and disrupting the experiment. To keep his work intact and allow the cat free roam, he cut a small hole in the door and covered it with cloth. That evolved into what is today known as a pet door, suitable for both cats and dogs.
~ Cats have a lot of hair.
A cat's body is covered with approximately 130,000 hairs for each square inch. Everybody knows what that means for your house or apartment: hair, hair, everywhere! I am going to patent a Cat De-Hairifier. It will be a tube about 18" high and three feet long with holes all around for attaching about 10 vacuum tubes. It will have 'oil de nip' rubbed on the inside. Cat walks in and searches wildly for the catnip; all the while his hair is being sucked out. Great idea, don't you think?!
~ Cats can use the toilet...and they can flush.
Possible? Really? According to experts you can really train your cat to use the toilet!

Origins of Dog Breeds

I have Germany on the brain since our Pets Jubilee team leader is going there next month. I became curious about dog breeds originating from that country, but after looking, I found other interesting breeds from other countries as well.  I picked out a few that I was not familiar with to SHOW their picture and TELL their country of origin. Do you recognize any? Do you know where your dog originated from?

Africanis from Africa

Canaan Dog from Israel

Formosan Mountain Dog from Thailand

Saluki from Egypt

Jindo from Korea

Mudi from Hungary

This site lists dozens and dozens of breeds, most with photos. It's pretty interesting!

Coyote Sightings!

This article is adapted from the one I wrote for a local paper just last week.  I thought it might be interesting in light of the coyote posts in the forum.

Several years ago, I was running through the woods behind the Kent State Campus next to the fairgrounds.  I have run the course many dozens of times. This particular day, however, held an unusual surprise. As I was running along the thickly wooded section of the path, I rounded a bend and was met by four long-legged, tawny canines. They were no more than 15 feet away. We stared at each other for several seconds. It was only a short encounter, then they bounded away.  But I have never forgotten their faces and the four pairs of eyes that met mine that day.  No snarls, no evil eyes. Just beautiful wild dogs out on a hunt or perhaps a morning stroll.
There have been many coyote sightings and many more coyote howls heard throughout Geauga County. I thought it might be interesting to learn a bit more about them and their way of life.

- Coyote parents may supply live mice to their pups for hunting practice.
- Coyotes are native only to North America.
- When coyotes are about two years old, they select a mate and stay with that mate for life.
- When hunting, coyotes sometimes pursue prey in relays, enabling packs to run down animals that could escape a single coyote. The list of prey able to escape a coyote is short - this is due to the fact that these animals can run in bursts as fast as 40 miles per hour and they also can jump over a 8' fence. These animals can also travel up to 400 miles at a stretch, stopping only occasionally to howl for news.
  - In 2006, a coyote was spotted in New York's Central Park.
- Coyotes use at least 10 different sounds to communicate, not counting their familiar yapping howl.
- In states with mountains, the coyote are more muscular.
- They do not hibernate and are very active during the winter months. Coyotes bed in sheltered areas, but do not use dens except when raising young, during severe weather or when they are being chased. Dens will have an entrance about a foot in diameter and are usually holes that have been used first by another animal like badgers or foxes.
- Coyotes can live and have adapted to virtually all types of habitat. From arctic to tropic, country to cities, desert to tundra.
- It is estimated that at least 400,000 coyotes are killed each year (one coyote is killed every minute) by federal, state, and local governments but also by private individuals.
- Coyotes can breed with both domestic dogs and wolves. A dog-coyote mix is called a "coydog".
- The great majority of coyotes don't prey upon livestock. However, once a coyote learns that young livestock are easy prey, depredation can become a problem. If this occurs, removal of the offending coyote is often recommended.

PJ Team Holiday Gift Exchange Part Two

This week some more prezzies surprised someone in the Petsjubilee team exchange.  Diana from DianaDesignsNY had gotten Eva from PaniEva as her gift exchange person.  Diana sent a very nice package to Eva full with a flower squeaky toy (with multiple squeakers) she made her self, a pendant necklace from TheHubbyShop that her hubby made, and a cute Santa Bobo like toy for the puppers that she got from PetsSuppliesPlus.  Looks like Kami has claimed it for now.

I wonder what will arrive in the mail next week for our team mates and from whom.  I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Short but cute

A cat died and went to Heaven. God met her at the gates and said, 'You have been a good cat all these years. Anything you want is yours for the asking.'

The cat thought for a minute and then said, 'All my life I lived on a farm and slept on hard wooden floors. I would like a real fluffy pillow to sleep on.'

God said, 'Say no more.' Instantly the cat had a huge fluffy pillow.

A few days later, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. God met the mice at the gates with the same offer that He made to the cat.

The mice said, 'Well, we have had to run all of our lives: from cats, dogs, and even people with brooms! If we could just have some little roller skates, we would not have to run again.'

God answered, 'It is done.' All the mice had beautiful
little roller skates.

About a week later, God decided to check on the cat. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow.. God gently awakened the cat and asked, 'Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?'

The cat replied, 'Oh, it is WONDERFUL. I have never been so happy in my life.
The pillow is so fluffy, and those little Meals on Wheels you have been sending over are delicious!'

Just a little humor- from
Diana

I also found this video, and the reason I was intrigued with it, is this is a Sinbad look-a-like (a Sun Conure) on the left and a DaVinci look-a-like (Moustache parrot) on the right.
((For those of you that do not know - Sinbad was a sun conure parrot I had that died last year at the age of 19. DaVinci is the bird I have now that I adopted a few months after Sinbad passed.)) This is not them, but just so wonderful for me to see this. To compare the 2, and the sizes are so similar, and to see them side by side like this.

PJ Team Gift Exchange

This week Sasha and I want to show off the first gift given in this year's Petsjubilee Team Holiday Gift Exchange. I was given Sue from FrumsGlassMenagerie to find something special to give her. The information was very helpful and let me know she collected Christmas cat and dog decorative items. Plus, she had three Italian greyhounds. Therefore, I looked up Christmas Italian Greyhounds on Etsy and I found this awesome stocking. It was part of a lovely shop called TheDogShow. I knew it would be perfect for Sue.

In the following weeks, I plan on sharing the gifts given and received through this year's team gift exchange.  So stay tuned to see everyone's new prezzies.

Dog Tricks to Be Envied

I think every dog owner loves to boast, perhaps even exaggerate, the wonderful virtues and capabilities of their dog. The ole "My dog's bigger than your dog" line. Surely everyone enjoys a well trained dog, and it is true that some are trained in such a way to 'wow' the onlooker. Here are a few fun Etsy listings of 'trained' dogs.

Slippers Anyone? From Cool to Creepy!

Our Rocket Dog discussion on the Petsjubilee forum got me thinking about slippers! Here are a few interesting facts.

~Because of the foreign people being uneducated to the Japanese customs, they would enter the Japanese homes with shoes on their feet. For this reason, special slippers were designed for the foreigners to slip on over their shoes before entering the home, keeping the inside sanitary. They also have toilet slippers because the toilet area of a Japanese home is considered unsanitary.

~Pope Benedict XVI is known to wear slippers which are scarlet red in color. He wears them with white socks.

~Derek Fan, who is known as "The Slipper Man", has made his place in the Guinness Book Of World Records. He wore a pair of dress slippers for twenty-three consecutive years. The twenty-third year was met on June 30, 2007.

Why "Dog Days"?
Have you ever wondered where the term "Dog days of summer" came from?

In ancient times, the Chinese, Native Americans, and Europeans all drew pictures in the sky by connecting the stars. Not all came up with same pictures, but all did connect stars and named their "star art", as I call it. Today we call these 'constellations',  and the European pictures were adopted as the preferred star art.  The brightest of the stars in Canis Major (the big dog) is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. The ancient Romans thought that the earth received heat from it. In the summer, Sirius, the “dog star,” rises and sets with the sun. During late July Sirius is in conjunction with the sun, and the ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather. They named this period of time, from 20 days before the conjunction to 20 days after, “dog days” after the dog star. The constellations today are not in exactly the same place in the sky as they were in ancient Rome, but  the time period for dog days occurs at about the same time, which is now designated between July 3 and August 11.

As we celebrate (or dread!) the Dog Days of summer, here are some great Etsy shops to help us enjoy them!

Stay cool peeps! Like this guy!
