Urinary Tract Infections

Dogs and cats occasionally get infections of the urethra or bladder. UTIs make it difficult to urinate -- which is why your pet has to go so often. The urinary tract can get painfully inflamed. To keep UTIs under control, here’s what the vets recommend.

Pour some juice: It’s a home remedy for humans that works for pets too. Cranberry and orange and other citrus juices boost the acidity of the urine, reducing the number of bacteria and helping relieve discomfort. One problem may be getting your pet to drink it -- try mixing an ounce with her breakfast if she refuses to drink it from a bowl.

Provide frequent potty breaks: When urine remains in the bladder for a long time, any bacteria that happen to be floating around have more time to multiply, possibly causing infection-causing levels. It’s a good idea to let your pet outside every few hours to flush away bacteria before they cause a problem.

Ask for assistance: Your pet may have great control, but if the only times she goes outside are before you go to work and after you get home, bacteria have plenty of time to do their dirty work. If you can’t get home during the day, perhaps a neighbor would let her out for you.

Get those paws moving: Most dogs and cats can’t go around the block without making a deposit. Taking at least two 20 minute walks a day will increase urination and reduce the risk of infection.

HYRAX

My son sent me a picture of these and titled it, "Angry Guinea Pigs". I thought I would do a little research on them. 

The hyrax, also called rock rabbit or dassie, is a small furry mammal. It looks like a robust, oversized guinea pig, or a rabbit with rounded ears and no tail. 

The rock hyrax has the widest distribution in East Africa.  They live at sea level and up to altitudes of over 14,000 feet and in habitats ranging from dry savanna to dense rainforest to cold Afro-alpine moorland. Rock hyraxes do not dig burrows. They live in colonies of 50 or so in natural crevices of rocks or bolders. They are active in the daytime and can be seen feeding or sunning themselves near the entrances to their shelters. 

Hyrax vocalizations include twitters, growls, whistles and shrieks. One group will answer the contact calls of another group. The raucous nocturnal shriek of the tree hyrax is most impressive, starting as a squeak or whistle, then rising to a piglike squeal and finally to a child's scream. Hyraxes do most of their screaming as they ascend or descend trees during the night.

Rock hyraxes spend several hours sunbathing in the mornings, followed by short excursions to feed. They eat quickly with the family group facing out from a circle to watch for potential predators, feeding on grasses, herbage, leaves, fruit, insects, lizards and birds' eggs. After biting off a mouthful of grass or leaves, the hyrax looks up and cautiously checks the vicinity. If the territorial male gives the shrill shriek of alarm, the hyraxes jump or scuttle to cover where they remain frozen, without moving, until the danger has passed. They can go a long time without water, apparently obtaining enough moisture from their food. Tree hyraxes feed on leaves and fruits.

Sasha's Play Date

Yes, we wiener dog people are a bit special because we just love to arrange wiener dog play dates. I think it is just because we all love wiener dogs so much and can't get enough of them. Plus, wiener dog people just get each other and we have a blast just watching the dogs play.

Yesterday, Sasha and I went to Suz house from RedWagonWieners and played with 4 other wiener dogs. There was Peewee the little red. There was Frito the big chubby red boy. There was Zuke the black and tan wire haired. Then, we had a new little visitor to our play date gang- Froto, Suz's son's girlfriend's wiener dog. It was a nice day, but ended too soon because a storm was on the horizon and Sasha just didn't want to play with the smell of rain/snow in the air.
