Fighting

While fighting is scary to watch and dangerous for the combatants, it’s extremely common. Here are some ways to stop battles before casualties occur.

-Don’t get in the middle: Dogs and cats in the heat of battle aren’t discriminating about what (or whom) they bite. So keep your hands clear. If you absolutely have to reach into a fight -- to prevent your pet from being seriously injured -- throw a heavy blanket over the combatants. This will protect your hands when you go for the grab.

-Go deep and loud: When you see a fight brewing, interrupt the aggression with the loudest, deepest ‘No!’ you can muster. Pets associate a low-pitched voice with a threatening growl and take it more seriously than they would a high pitched command.

-Give them a blast: If the squabble occurs in the vicinity of a garden hose, giving the combatants a shot of water will help quench their ardor. Cooling them off with a pitcher of water will serve the same purpose.

-Sit out minor brawls: When dogs or cats meet, you can expect a certain amount of posturing, hissing, growling or tussling. In most cases it’s just their way of becoming acquainted. Chances are the ruckus will calm down in a minute or two.

-Organize get-togethers: To help your pet understand that a strange pet isn’t always hostile, it helps to let them be around their peers as often as possible. Vets recommend introducing pets to others of their kind after their first set of vaccinations, around 12 weeks of age.

-Plan meetings ahead of time: When introducing two (or more) four-legged strangers, try to do it at a time of day when they’re naturally feeling peaceful. After a big meal or when the animals are sleepy or after a long walk or play period is best.

-Introduce them on neutral ground: Rather than bringing animals together at home, where territorial feelings run high, let them meet in a neutral place such as a park.

-Neuter them young: Fighting is greatly reduced in males that have been neutered. Even in females, spaying can reduce some of the aggressive tendencies that lead to fighting.

-Keep him under control: Always have your dog on a leash when you’re in public. If a fight seems to be brewing, you can quickly pull him out of danger.

-Keep the leash low: Although it is natural to pull on the leash when another dog approaches, this pulls your dog’s head into fighting posture. Keep the leash low and loose, so this unintentional body language doesn’t cause the other dog to attack.

-Respect the hierarchy: To prevent fights in the family, older dogs generally should be given more respect and attention than the young upstarts. The older dog gets greeted first, gets groomed first and gets his treat first.

-For CATS only: You’ll want to keep your cat indoors. The average life span of an outdoor cat is 1 to 2 years; for an indoor cat, it’s 12 to 14 years.

Read Across America Day in United States

Many people in the United States, particularly students, parents and teachers, join forces on Read Across America Day, annually held on March 2. This nationwide observance coincides with the birthday of Dr Seuss, who is known for writing children’s books.  Read Across America Day promotes reading, particularly for children and young adults.  Many schools, libraries, and community centers across the United States participate in the day by bringing people together to take part in reading books. 

Here is a list of the first 10 of the World’s Best Selling Books of all Times:

Bible:
The Bible is one of the topmost selling books of all times. This is divided into two sections – the Old Testament and the New Testament. There are many translations of the same that can be found in major bookstores. Currently, there are approximately 438 translations of the full Bible in various languages. 

A Tale of Two Cities:
Charles Dickens is known for his great works and a ‘Tale of Two Cities’ is a fine example, which also ranks high as one the best selling books around the world. This historical novel is written during the time of the French Revolution. It is set against the backdrop of London, Paris, England and France. 

The Lord of the Rings:
One of the best sellers of the recent times, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a fantasy novel that is very extensive and consists of three parts. J.R.R. Tolkien began this work as a sequel to one of his earlier works titled, ‘The Hobbit’. This brought about a new market for fantasy books owing to the popularity of this category. ‘The Lord of the Rings’ has also been made successfully into a film - a total of 3 in number.

And Then There Were None:
Agatha Christie has always been known for her detective fiction. ‘And Then There Were None’ is known the world over as one of the best selling mystery books of all times! This book was first published with a different title – ‘Ten Little Indians’. It has also been adapted for a play and a film.

The Da Vinci Code:
This book is known as probably one of author Dan Brown’s best works. ‘The Da Vinci Code’ was one of the most popular mystery novels. This book created a lot of controversy and despite all the problems it faced, it has been one of the major successes in recent times. The book has later been printed with special illustrations to support the text matter and there was also a film released with the same title.

Anne of Green Gables:
This book was initially meant for all ages, but in the recent times it has been termed as a children’s book. Author Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote this book when she was inspired by a story she had written during her childhood days. Today, there are many tourist attractions developed with a base on this story.

Black Beauty:
This book is an autobiography of a highbred horse and the story of his life. The author, Anna Sewell, talks about this horse named Black Beauty and the incidents that revolve around him, all of which have a story to tell. The author’s primary aim was to introduce acts of kindness for horses and animals in general. This beautiful story also ranks high in the top list of the world’s best selling books. 

The Alchemist:
One of Paulo Coelho’s famous works, ‘The Alchemist’ is all about following your dreams. The story revolves around a boy named Santiago who has a dream that talks about a hidden treasure. Santiago then begins his travel, which ultimately revolves around how a person should follow one’s dream.

Harry Potter Series:
J.K. Rowling created a sensation with her ‘Harry Potter’ series. These series that consist of seven novels are based purely on the fantasy world. It unravels the story of a young wizard named Harry Potter and his series of adventures with friends, Ron Weasley and Hermoine Granger. The seven series have created a sensation, which ultimately saw the release of the movies as well.

To Kill a Mockingbird:
This novel deals with many issues with a fine touch of humor. ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ was also adapted for a film that even won at the Oscars. Written by Harper Lee, the story takes place during the time of the Great Depression. It also deals with racial injustice. This novel has won the Pulitzer Prize.
