Just how good is a dog’s visual acuity? Although the dog’s acuity is considerably less than that of a normal human, a lot of information is still getting from his eyes to his brain, even though the focus is ‘soft’ and he won’t be able to make out many details. The overall effect is something like viewing the world through a fine mesh gauze or a piece of cellophane that has been smeared with a light coat of petroleum jelly. The overall outlines are visible, but a lot of the internal details will be blurred and might even be lost.
Another important difference between the vision of humans and dogs has to do with the field of view -- that is, how much of the world each eye sees. A human’s visual field is about 200 degrees. Because an average dog’s eyes are set more to the side than ours, this gives them a considerably larger field of view -- about 240 degrees. A dog with a long nose has eyes set much more to the side and can see an estimated 270 degrees -- a difficult dog to sneak up on…
Probably one of the most frequently asked questions about dog’s vision is whether dogs see colors. The simple answer -- namely, that dogs are color blind -- has been misinterpreted by most people as meaning that dogs see no colors but only shades of gray. This is wrong. Dogs see the colors of the world as basically yellow and blue. They see the colors green, yellow and orange as yellowish, and they see violet and blue as blue. Blue-green is seen as gray. Red is difficult for dogs to see and may register with them as a very dark gray or perhaps even a black.
Dogs use their eyes mostly for the chase; they guide the dog to its fleeing quarry and help him to accurately guide his jaws to grab it. Any other information that the dog gets from vision is just a bonus. The mind of the dog is filled with lots of information about the world, but most of that information is not in the form of visual images.

How Did You Happen Upon Your Animals?

I told everyone I knew! There I was talking with a friend on the bus ride home from work and mentioned I wanted a dog. Her assistant was sitting across from us and she said she was thinking of giving of their puppy because they didn’t have time for him. Three days later Cody came to live with me. He’s a big black lab, Weinmaraner mix and I wouldn’t trade him for anything. I think he was meant to be with me.
As Cody grew older, I started thinking that he needed a younger dog to play with. Now we are living in Oxnard, CA in a house with a yard too. I was looking on Craigslist and checking out the local shelter. I was talking with my boss one Monday and he mentioned he brought home a 6-month old Springer Spaniel who was going either to a shelter or rescue group. My boss hated that idea! I said I was looking for another dog but he was giving the pup to his inlaws. The next day I received a phone call asking if I wanted Copper. The answer was of course YES! I think he was meant to be with me too.
Both dogs are energetic and Copper even more so. I love them both and they get along very well. I wouldn‘t trade them for anything.
So tell me, how did you happen upon your pets?

Ask The Petsjubilee Pets: Tummy Kisses Yuck!
As promised from last week, we are answering this letter:
Dear Sasha,
Whenever I lay on my back trying to cool off my under parts, my human has to come over and kiss my belly. Then she pulls all 4 of my feet one at a time making these silly noises. How do I get her to stop doing this?
Signed,
annoyed and embarrassed
Dear annoyed and embarrassed,
Don't you just hate it when humans do the belly kissing and that other thing. I think they call it "raspberries". I know from personal experience there is a few special ways to deal with this bad human behavior problem. Unfortunately, most will get you in trouble. With humans you need to do it at the same time as they are doing the naughty behavior. I hear they don't seem to understand delayed consequences like chewing up a purse strap when they aren't looking. Here are my suggestions:
1.) Cover up in cute doggy outfits. The more frilly and over the top on cuteness the better. Usually, they are so pleased that you look like them that they forget all about the belly kisses. However, it does have the "Loser" effect among the Alpha dogs in the neighborhood.
2.) The moment the human goes in for the belly kissing, start licking either the inside of the human's ear or your butt. Both are a quick turn offs to the humans. However, this may result in getting your teeth cleaned or your butt squeezed cause you know humans are slow to learn new behaviors.
3.) Last resort, pee in her face. I haven't personally done this and I suspect it would lead to a major time out. However, I have heard that the human pups (also known as babies) do it and it works big time.
I do hope these suggestions help.
Your Friend In Fur,
